About 6 months ago, Mike-E at Lynxus.com turned me on to Puffy. They are my favoritest little Japanese pop stars. Ami and Yumi were recruited and recorded by top songwriter, Okuda Tamio, and Sony Records, Japan. While Tamio writes mostly all the music, and plays several instruments on Puffy's albums, he lets the "fascinating girl-beatles" (phrase coined by the Puffmeister) do the singing and dancing to become one of Japan's top selling acts. (From what I hear they are on TV 3-4 times a week, and in magazines and newspapers all the time.)
The music is an extremely catchy mix of 50's-70's pop (like surfer music, trippy guitar rock, and some Partridge Family tunes), Grunge, Death Metal, and even some Jazz and Schmaltz. Really, a true Sonic Experience.
The first thing you notice, obviously, has to be these girls. Both are cute as a button. They are in their mid 20's, with Ami being a year older than Yumi.. With the ever-changing Puffy image, it is very easy to get enthralled by these girls, and their adventures in the crazy world of J-Pop. In their Puffy Jet VCD, Puffy are in a 50's sci-fi style Jet rocket, cruisin' around the universe, talking about stuff, and doing little things. It's all very cute. Too bad I have no idea what they are saying. It's obviously all in Japanese. (With Chinese subtitles. A lot of good that does me!)
But, God, they seem so happy! Singing those little pop songs, dancing like only Puffy can. When I feel down, all I've got to do is pop in the house copy of Jet CD, and listen to that jam, "Aino Shirusi" with the timpani drum intro and the jangly acoustic guitar driving that extra-catchy, extra-smart melody line, and I'm smiling! I don't, again, have any idea what "Aino Shirusi" means, but I'm sure it's something nice and sweet. That's enough for old Dusty! And, with such trite lyrics out in pop music today (as always) what could be better than not knowing what the words are?
I think, with this amazing sense of melody, rhythm, and roots music, Okuda Tamio has created a sound, and put together the two girls, that can change the face of this cold and cruel nation called America. Puffy, please transform us from a group of well-armed barbarians, to the sweet, lovable, and squishy human beings that Ami and Yumi really want us to be.
Puffy has been to America a couple of times and shot videos here. But, regrettably, they have yet to do even a brief American tour. With top-notch musicians that rival top American studio players, and the great songs they perform, Puffy would surely be a hit here. They would bring Peace to this land. If only we could find a way to get them to come and play!!!
Thus, the mission of this page. If anyone out there in the internet community has any Ideas, Please Let Me Know. We here at 185cool are working hard every day to find a solution to this problem that has plagued all of us in The West. We need to be free! WE NEED PUFFY!!!
For the love of Humanity, help us to get them here!!!
